Common Threads: A Community Playgroup for Families After Loss

Common Threads is a welcoming sibling grief support group for children and families navigating life after the death of a baby, sibling, or child. Whether your family experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal loss, infant loss, or the death of a child at any age, this group offers children a safe place to connect, create, play, and explore their grief alongside others who understand.

You do not need to have received support from Empty Arms to participate. Common Threads is open to any family who has experienced the loss of a baby or child and has children looking for connection, understanding, and age-appropriate grief support. Whether your loss happened recently or many years ago, every family's story is welcome here.

Each session is designed to be a welcoming, low-pressure space where children can simply be kids. Through open concept play, and games, children have the opportunity to connect with peers who understand that loss is part of their family's story. There is no expectation for children—or their caregivers—to talk about their grief unless they choose to. Sometimes healing looks like sharing memories, and sometimes it looks like laughing, playing, and knowing you're in a room where no explanation is needed.

Common Threads is peer facilitated by members of the pregnancy, infant, and child loss community who understand firsthand the unique challenges of raising children after loss. While the morning includes gentle opportunities for connection, its primary focus is creating a warm, supportive environment where families can spend time together, children can explore and build friendships, and caregivers can connect with others who truly understand. Everyone is welcome to participate in whatever way feels most comfortable.

At Common Threads, we believe every child deserves a place where their sibling is remembered, their family's story is honoured, and they are reminded that they are not alone. Together, we foster connection, belonging, and the comforting reminder that love for our children continues to be woven into everyday life.
